I find you not the least bit humorous Dr. Bialy, anymore than I found your "falsification" of HIV/AIDS that received, and continues to receive so much attention on the blog thanks to the popular but misguided Dean Esmay, the least bit convincing.

In any event, I shall not be returning, as I also find your so-called "art work" as intellectually empty as Duesberg's "theories" about HIV.

"The Dusenberger" Invades the NCI

A full account of the background to this breakthrough is available in my only full-length prose work, Oncogenes, Aneuploidy and AIDS: A Scientific Life &Times of Peter H. Duesberg. It was reviewed in Amazon on Sept. 10, 2004, by William Breeze, and Peter asked after he read the brief essay below, "if i knew who (Dr.?) Breeze might be?"

Duesberg's Huxley, September 10, 2004
Reviewer: William Breeze (New York, NY)

Bialy does for Duesberg what T.H. Huxley did for Darwin, by taking up the cudgels for a fellow scientist and his thinking. Employing deft characterizations and a mordant wit (to which he occasionally gives free rein with delightful effect), he provides an incisive understanding of the scientific and social issues behind cancer genetics and AIDS research. Written from the unique vantages of a longtime friend and colleague, and from within the hallowed precincts of the world's oldest continually published scientific periodical, Nature, the book gives a real "inside analysis" of biomedical science since the advent of the modern biotechnologies. The book is elegantly composed and has an overall sonata allegro form, with the first and last chapters developing the various themes of cancer genetics and the middle three featuring the story of HIV and its relationship to AIDS. The first person style, and the clear but rigorous scientific history that it relates, make it both accessible and enjoyable to the general reader. It is guaranteed to provoke a few smiles and many grimaces from the stalwarts of HIV and oncogene (cancer gene) theory.

Bialy is a molecular biologist who was involved in the genesis of biotechnology as the founding scientific editor of the most prominent journal in the field (Nature Biotechnology). His literary talent allows him to guide the reader through a gradual exposition of the scientific issues while telling the cautionary tale of Duesberg's courageous struggle to restore objectivity, fairness and intellectual integrity to cancer and AIDS research. It shows just how vulnerable the great tradition of hypothesis, experiment, proof, peer review and publication can be to manipulation by vested interests, media, and government institutions with public health party lines. When these close ranks they wield a formidable, monolithic power that can dictate the way science is allowed to proceed. Pit against this a scientist at the top of his field who commits the unforgivable 'sin' of challenging an orthodoxy he himself was critical in establishing, and the predictable outcome is marginalization, ridicule and out-of-hand dismissal. Duesberg suffered all of this. Yet he continued, in an amazingly dogged way as the reader learns, to apply the high standards of scientific proof that had made him so famous, feared and respected in the intellectual salad days of molecular biology. These are the elements of a classic heroic tale, but rather than portray Duesberg as a white knight, Bialy more interestingly and accurately doesn't portray him at all. Instead he presents the unadulterated thinking of this immensely reasonable, patient and persistent scientist, who is if anything an anti-hero. The plot, accordingly, is not that of an epic but of a dark mystery -- the central one, left unsolved and for the astonished reader to ponder, being "why?" The book reveals "how," "what" and "who" in a way that I found irresistible.

Whilst Peter Duesberg's rethinking of AIDS dogma has not as yet become even semi-respectable (although this book could help change that if enough people actually read it), the book's final chapters show how his two decades of criticism of qualitative oncogene theory led him to his now well-recognized quantitative aneuploidy (numerical chromosomal abnormalities) theory of cancer causation.

Subject: Duesberg the Dragon Slayer

Hi Harvey,

Our daughter Janet called as usual this past Sunday and we were going over the events of the week, then as usual we ended up discussing literature. She studied pre-med at Bryn Mawr College with a minor in Spanish poetry. Anyway, she said she just ordered a book on AIDS over Amazon.com in response to an ad she had received at Emory (because she knows Peter). She is a professor of endocrinology at Emory Med School, but is mostly a research scientist and has quite a big lab doing bone research. (She also was just offered an endowed chair at U. North Carolina.) (I'm bragging...but why not.) I, of course, asked, "What book?" And it turned out to be yours. She wanted my reaction, and I told her I had not read it but did very much like the cover. (I actually copied the cover to my art section on the computer.) But I also had to tell her that in spite of your great cover design, you should have used my painting, ala Peter as St. George of dragon fame. The painting hung in the Ryder Gallery on campus a long while back. If you like, I could take a picture and scan it into the computer, and then send you a copy. It is quite good ... even "St. George" would like it.

Eric Malone just sent me the this ::

Plan for Dalai Lama lecture angers neuroscientists

David Adam, science correspondent
Wednesday July 27, 2005
The Guardian

The Dalai Lama is at the centre of an unholy row among scientists over his plans to deliver a lecture at a prominent neuroscience conference.

His talk stems from a growing interest in how Buddhist meditation may affect the brain, but researchers who dismiss such studies as little more than mumbo-jumbo say they will boycott the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting in November if it goes ahead.

Jianguo Gu, a neuroscientist at the University of Florida who has helped to organise a petition against the Dalai Lama's lecture, said: "I don't think it's appropriate to have a prominent religious leader at a scientific event. "The Dalai Lama basically says the body and mind can be separated and passed to other people. There are no scientific grounds for that. We'll be talking about cells and molecules and he's going to talk about something that isn't there."

Dr Gu and many of the scientists who initiated the protest are of Chinese origin, but say their concern are not related to politics. The Dalai Lama has lived in exile in India since he fled Chinese troops in Tibet in 1959.

"I'm not against Buddhism," said Dr Gu, who has cancelled his own
presentation at the meeting. "People believe what they believe but I think it will just confuse things."

The Dalai Lama has long had an interest in science and once said that if he had not been a monk he would have been an engineer. Over the past decade he has encouraged western neuroscientists to study the effects of Buddhist meditation, originally through meetings at his home and more recently by attending conferences at major US
universities.

Buddhist monks typically spend hours in meditation each day, a practice they say enhances their powers of concentration.

Trained meditators claim to be able to hold their attention on a single object for hours at a time without distraction, or to shift attention as many as 17 times in the time it takes to snap your fingers.

Both claims go against current scientific thinking, which says attention cannot be held as long or switched so quickly, and some neuroscientists have started investigating whether they have a biological basis. Some believe the monks' skills could be down to plasticity, the ability of even fully formed adult mammalian brains to change and adapt.

The research peaked in November last year when a team led by Richard
Davidson, a psychologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, published research in the US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that suggested networks of brain cells were better coordinated in people who were trained in meditation.

The scientists included Matthieu Ricard, a Buddhist monk at the Shechenm monastery in Nepal, who has a PhD in molecular biology from the Pasteur Institute in Paris. They said the brain differences they observed might explain the heightened awareness reported by meditating monks.

Mr Davidson helped to arrange the Dalai Lama's talk at the neuroscience conference, which is the first in a series billed as dialogues between neuroscience and society.

The protesters say the team's research is flawed because it compared monks in their 30s and 40s with much younger university students.

Their petition reads: "Inviting the Dalai Lama to lecture on neuroscience of meditation is of poor scientific taste because it will highlight a subject with hyperbolic claims, limited research and compromised scientific rigour."

It compares the lecture to inviting the Pope to talk about "the relationship between the fear of God and the amygdala [part of the brain]" and adds "it could be a slippery road if neuroscientists begin to blur the border between science and religious practices".

Carol Barnes, the president of the Society for Neuroscience, said: "The Dalai Lama has had a long interest in science and has maintained an ongoing dialogue with leading neuroscientists for more than 15 years, which is the reason he was invited to speak at the meeting. It has been agreed that the talk will not be about religion or politics.

"We understand that not every member will agree with every decision and we respect their right to disagree."

The Black Death of the 21St Century - a CFR Report

The much prized Laurie Garrett's report on HIV and National Security: Where Are The Links? for the Council of Foreign Relations makes a pair with her article in the independent society's journal, Foreign Affairs, of July/August (Vol. 84 Number 4), The Lessons of HIV/AIDS.

Both are either magisterial or drivel depending on where where you stand on the basic scientific assumptions of HIV/AIDS, especially whether

a) HIV is the implacable destroyer of human immune systems OR a harmless specimen of the 98,000 retroviruses that inhabit the human body (yours and mine) without causing any discernible effect on health whatsoever (ignoring for the moment Robert Gallo's HTLV-1, which he once claimed to us causes leukemia in "1 in 100 people who carry it in fifty years", but which most of the Japanese living in a certain region carry without evidencing any higher rate of leukemia than anybody else), and

b) whether HIV is extremely infectious and dangerously liable to transfer in a single bout of sex with a prostitute and then be passed on as quickly to a wife OR is vanishingly non-infectious and virtually impossible to transfer through heterosexual copulation, which is what the peer-reviewed scientific literature tells us.

************************************************

Special service announcement:

Cutting to the chase: Is AIDS infectious via male-female sex?
Mainstream science answers: No.

Contrary to the key assumption of the Council report, and the prevailing understanding (almost) everywhere else, scientists have long found that HIV is utterly uninfectious in heterosexual sex in Africa or anywhere else.

This is not just according to the unwavering critic and AIDS reviewer Peter Duesberg and his many scientifically informed supporters, who have in fact repeatedly referenced this literature since the beginning of the supposed epi/pandemic. This is according to the mainstream scientific literature in the main AIDS journals, which repeatedly finds evidence that an epidemic of infectious AIDS among heterosexuals is scientifically impossible.

The mounting pile (twenty or more thus far) mainstream peer-reviewed scientific papers published in the central journals of AIDS for many years on this point have long and repeatedly established that to transfer HIV, insofar as that is what is meant and indicated by HIV test results, takes "discordant" couples (one positive, one negative) on average 1000 sex bouts between man and woman. This rate would make an epidemic, let alone a global pandemic, impossible. None of these studies have so far been challenged.

In the next post following we will fully reference these peer reviewed papers, which entirely vitiate the main premise, the central pillar of the mainstream global AIDS narrative, that global AIDS is transmitted through heterosexual sex. They include two studies published within the last few months and, as we say, none have been disputed in the literature.

In other words, the established scientific fact undisputed by the mainstream establishment scientists in AIDS is that AIDS is not heterosexually infectious to any significant or meaningful extent. Thus any report, story or theoretical fantasy of global pandemic constructed on the premise is, according to the mainstream's own scientific studies, utterly impossible.

Or as Monty Python might say, the idea is a non starter, moribund at the starting gate, dead as any doornail, completely hundred per cent null and void, inconcievable, non existent and impossible. In fact, if it was a parrot, it would be an ex-parrot before it was an egg.

Mr. Praline: 'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This parrot is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-PARROT!!

Apparently, however, the army of UN and other researchers and reporters who helped Laurie Garrett prepare the Council report do not read the scientific literature in AIDS any more often that she does. Because the entire report hinges on this premise.

End of special service anouncement.

Part II (from New Aids Review, 16 August 2005

16 mainstream papers say that the AIDS 'pandemic' does not exist

Here as promised are the mainstream papers which say HIV is effectively non infectious, heterosexually, so any idea of HIV/AIDS being an infectious global pandemic is null and void.

In other words, the global pandemic to which Laurie Garrett just devoted two years of her hard working career recording, analyzing and writing up in a splendid report for the Council of Foreign Relations is, to put it in easy to understand, blunt, Monty Pythonesque terms, a dead parrot--impossible according to the very mainstream AIDS literature that it appears she failed adequately to consult.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves. The first paper is a kind of meta-study, looking at all the studies available by 2001.

Let’s see what it can tell us about the nature of the Great Global AIDS/HIV pandemic.

Great Heavens! How can this be?! The authors come up with the following stunning finding: the chance of transmitting HIV-1 from man to woman during their bout of lovemaking is... one in a thousand!!

Analysis of data from North American and European studies of heterosexual couples provide estimates of per-sex-act HIV-1 transmission of approximately 1 in 1000

So how can a raging global AIDS/HIV pandemic arise from an agent that is transmitted at the rate of once every thousand copulations?! Even the group of clearly pious, mainstream-ideology authors of the paper are evidently taken aback. Obviously seeing the problem, they are reduced to saying rather feebly, in the next sentence, “the magnitude of the HIV-1 epidemic would argue that these estimates might be unreasonably low.”

Low indeed. Contemplate what would have to take place for an epidemic to emerge from a rate of transference of one in a thousand bouts. A man with HIV would have to fornicate with his woman or women one thousand times, on average, to transmit the virus once. Even if he had sex once every night, three years wouldn't be enough to ensure a single transmission.

For any kind of epidemic to transpire, enough sex for transmission would have to be done in a relatively short time, far shorter than the average time heterosexual men take to provoke and consummate one thousand sexual engagements. Cohabiting couples are generally assumed to engage in sex twice a week, we are told. One thousand bouts would take them ten years.

No infection is going to spread if it takes ten years for the agent to jump ship to ship. This rate rules out any pandemic. Even love making once a day wouldn’t be enough to support a spreading infection, let alone an epidemic. Pandemic? Fugeddabahtit!!

If there really was the glohal pandemic everyone led by the UNAID, WHO and Laurie Garrett and the Council of Foreign Relations credits as gospel the supermen of the AIDS pandemic must get a lot busier than that. Let's see now, surely ten copulations a day would do it? That would "only" be 100 days of Olympic ten-times-a-day sex per transfer.

Actually, even that remarkable performance standard would still not be good enough. A virus that took 100 days to infect another body is too slow. That is just too long a delay to get any kind of epidemic under way. It would have to be five times that rate, or 50 copulations a day to do it in twenty days, which is the rough minimum, we guess, to support any kind of epidemic spread.

That is to say, if the couples went at it at the rate of 50 bouts of sex a day it would take on average twenty days for the virus to hop from gent to lady. Maybe that would sustain an epidemic. But how many men do you know--or women for that matter--who are interested in let alone capable of fifty bouts of sex a day?

But if there is any kind of epidemic, that is what the finding of this mainstream paper--which collates the findings of 15 other orthodox research papers on the topic--implies.

Perhaps the African and Asian males who have engendered the AIDS pandemic, the one that the Council of Foreign Relations has recently warned us may plunge the world into wars, famine and devastation, are a Godlike breed, who have Olympian sexual powers far beyond the norm or even the imagination of their counterparts in the USA.

More likely, however, is that quite simply, the global AIDS pandemic is a fantasy and a chimera, an impossible narrative construct of such a gargantuan level of poppycock that science and politics have not to date ever seen the like.

This is what the papers on the (non) infectiousness of HIV tell us, as summarized so helpfully by this paper. They may be found any time on your computer at Pub Med. Here they are for the record, the meta-paper and a list of the papers it summarizes:

The meta-paper

On page 2, this paper says that

“The probability of per-partner sexual transmission has been examined in 11 different studies (6) whereas the per-sex-act probability of transmission has been reported in 13 studies (7-19). The probability of transmission of HIV-1 from male to female during an episode of intercourse has been examined in seven of these studies (7,14-19). Analysis of data from North American and European studies of heterosexual couples provide estimates of per-sex-act HIV-1 transmission of approximately 1 in 1000 (0.0001, ranging from 0.0008 to 0.0002) (6), although the magnitude of the HIV-1 epidemic would argue that these estimates might be unreasonably low.” .

These are not all, by the way. There have been quite a few other papers since, saying the same thing. Here's one from 2002, a year later:

Stephane Hugonnet et al Incidence of HIV Infection in Stable Sexual Partnerships: A Retrospective Cohort Study of 1802 Couples in Mwanza Region, Tanzania. JAIDS Journal of nAcquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome 30: 73-80 2002

This paper concludes in its abstract:

“HIV negative individuals in discordant partnerships are at high risk of infection, and preventive interventions targeted at such individuals are urgently needed......Individuals living in discordant couples (that means one HIV positive one negative) were at greatly increased risk of infection compared with individuals in concordant-negative couples."

In its introduction it states that

"the majority of infections worldwide are attributable to heterosexual transmission. In sub-Saharan Africa, the worst afflicted region, heterosexual transmission accounts for at least 90 per cent of adult infections."

All in all, what sounds like a dangerous state of affairs illuminated by the sterling work of these researchers on data from 1802 couples in Mwanza. For after all, if "HIV negative individuals in discordant partnerships are at high risk of infection", then indeed heterosexual transmission could account for 90 per cent of adult infections.

But when we look closer, we discover the same problem, this time also being neatly brushed under the carpet. There is in fact little or no danger, as indicated by the authors' very own result. The "high risk" of a heterosexual coupling changing a discordant couple into a concordant couple—these musical sounding technical terms refer to whether couples share the same HIV status or not—turns out to be exactly the same as in the collection of papers before 2000: 1 in 1000.

Buried in the pile of comforting statistical jargon, which is mostly less than meets the eye (py means person-year, RR means rate ratio, etc), is this simple statement: Seroincidence rates in discordant couples were 10 per 100 person-years (py) and 5 per 100 py for women and men respectively (rate ratio RR = 2.0 CI (confidence interval = 0.28-22.1.)

What does this mean in plain English? That in any of these Mwanza couples with the man HIV+ and woman HIV-, the chances of the woman being converted to HIV+ are so low that on average it takes ten years to happen. For the man to be infected the other direction would take twice as long, twenty years.

The standard assumption in such work is that couples make love twice a week, so that is 100 times a year. So ten years is 1000 times. The chances of a woman converting in a single bout are therefore 1 in 1000, with the chances of the man converting from a HIV+ woman partner 1 in 2000.

Exactly the chances which are found in every other paper on this topic. The figure is marvelously consistent: 1 in a thousand.

The Mwanza study researchers thus find themselves in a great difficulty and as a result have to contradict themselves as they state what is certainly a paradigm buster of a finding.

At such a low rate of conversion, not only is it NOT true that "HIV negative individuals in discordant partnerships are at high risk of infection" (unless you call a 1 in 10 chance over a year of 100 bouts 'high risk'), but it is also not true that "preventive interventions targeted at such individuals are urgently needed".

Far from it. For their very own finding proves that any AIDS epidemic through mainstream sex is quite impossible. The rate of transfer of HIV is just too low, far too low. According to these mainstream, orthodox researchers HIV is realistically not an infectious virus at all, at least between heteroexuals in Africa. It simply could not support any epidemic.

In fact, the paper indicates a simple conclusion, which the authors for whatever reason are either blind to or do not wish to speak out loud. That finding is that there is no HIV/AIDS epidemic in Mwanza or anywhere else.

Clearly the infectivity of HIV is far too low to spread through heterosexual sex in the US and Europe, and that is why such an epidemic has never been seen here or there in the two decades the AIDS alarm has been noised so loudly in headlines and homilies from the press to the pulpit. By the same logic it is also too low to support any heterosexual AIDS epidemic anywhere in the rest of the world.

In other words, as we have said before, the AIDS pandemic is a non starter, a nag that expires even before it is even able to take its position at the starting gate. It is utterly non-viable, at least in the real, external world of health and science.

How far this kite may fly on the wings of obtuse venality, incompetence, officiousness, powerseeking, self-importance, conformity, credulity and billion dollar funding in the fantasy world of political, social and medical culture is of course another matter entirely.

Apparently, it can stay up without a drop of fuel for twenty one years simply on the cross currents and updrafts of hot air generated by the major writers and players of the ongoing drama "World AIDS Pandemic" and is capable of flying high for many more years unless and until it is shot down by anti-paradigm guns more powerful than those of simple logic and common sense, not to mention its own research.

And by the way, there are more papers to list, papers from the orthodox mainstream research factory, and we will append them here later today.

But the main point is already established. HIV is effectively not infectious between man and woman, and the AIDS heterosexual global pandemic cannot and therefore does not exist.

This is the conclusion of the orthodoxy itself, reached in its own papers. Verily the right hand knoweth not what the left hand doeth.

There were these bigshot CEOs
Had a front man dumb as a post
Whose credibility was in smithereens
But on November 2nd
Or so some folks have reckoned
They fiddled with some Red State votin’ machines
He’s in the White House now
He’s in the White House now
Well, it pert near makes me quail
That there wasn’t no paper trail
He’s in the White House now

Well the preachers who bat righty
All swear by God Almighty
That votin’ was completely on the level
But there on CNN
The cams caught Karl Rove when
He slipped a billion dollars to the Devil
He’s in the White House now
He’s in the White House now
Well, it’s gonna be heavy sleddin’
From here to Armageddon
He’s in the White House now

(Yodel)

Well all them Bush advisers
Gettin’ antsy for their oil geysers
But Iraq just won’t play accordin’ to plan
So Dubya wants to distract
From the fact that we’re gettin’ shellacked
By startin’ a brand new ground war in Iran
We’re in the Shit House now
We’re in the Shit House now
We’ll be cryin’ into our beers
Every day for the next four years
We’re in the Shit House now

Best performance of this (so far) took place at SUNY New Paltz in the Old Main Building Auditorium on May 7, 2005 (the day after my father's funeral). We got the 300+ audience to moan and weep along on the choruses, very cathartic. Personnel: Mikhail Horowitz, vocals and kazoo; Gilles Malkine, guitar; Charlie Kniceley, bass; Henry Sapoznik, banjo; Jay Ungar, fiddle.

The original tune was written and recorded by the great Jimmie Rodgers. Many artists have covered it, including Doc Watson, Johnny Cash, Jim Kweskin and his jug band, and most recently the Soggy Bottom Boys, for the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou".

ANEUPLOIDY AND CANCER:: DUESBERG IS RIGHT ACCORDING TO NATURE

from the 13 October Nature:

Editor's Summary

Cancer and cell division

"A hypothesis about cancer initiation, first proposed nearly a century ago, has stood the test of time. German biologist Theodor Boveri suggested that a failure of cell division might produce tetraploid cells (containing a double chromosome quota) that then undergo multipolar mitosis, leading to genome instability that can trigger cancer. Fujiwara et al. tested the hypothesis using an actin inhibitor to block cell division and generate tetraploid cells. The resulting cells can be transformed in vitro and also generate tumours in mice. The transformed cells exhibit massive genomic instability, including an amplification of a region containing genes associated with breast cancers."

It goes without saying that neither the editorial nor the accompanying paper make any reference to Peter's work, but that is to be expected.

Nonetheless, the literature is replete with his contributions that most certainly influenced and heavily the design and conception of the experiments reported with such glowing enthusiam by nature's illustrious editor (a physicist by the way, not a biologist).

Anyone interested in a history of the aneuploidy theories of cancer from their original Boveri construction so long ago, to the Duesberg reinvigoration and highly quantitative modernization can of course read my prophetic book.

Why these two?

Maddox and Koshland each had several opportunities to slow the inexorable acceleration of the HIV/AIDS shitball. Neither did, and worse, each used the offices of their respective, very powerful journals to poison the very atmosphere in which normal scientific discourse had proceeded for centuries.

These propositions are demonstrated beyond any shadow of any doubt in my biography of Peter Duesberg.

Why now?

It has been 5 academic generations since HIV has been loose in the world of science, and has done to its immune system over these "points in time" what it could never do to the physical bodies of any of the "scientists" who should have been lifelong vaccinated.

This sad proposition was demonstrated to me finally and clearly by this transmission, and I had no choice but to issue my indictment.

Fast Food Etiology: It Came Quick, but “Where’s The Beef ?

As visitors to this gallery know, almost one year ago I became involved, for reasons that I best not even try to explain, in the new form of instant, worldwide communication known as the blogosphere. The fruits of these sometimes strenuous labors, are the series of "books" located here.

A major, recurring theme in all of these internet "forums" is the one that Kary Mullis, inventor of the Nobel-worthy invention known as PCR, first raised about ten years ago.

Where are the peer-reviewed papers that "proved" HTLV-III, and its "AIDS"-associated close cousins (if not clonal sibs), LAV and ARV, deserved to be re-designated as "the AIDS virus"?

Many, many obfuscating answers can be found in the "books" mentioned above.

This morning, again for reasons of which I have "noooo idea", it occurred to me to do a simple PubMed search of the 1984/85 critical years. In about ten minutes, the following three linchpin papers below were obvious.

One need only read the language of their titles and abstracts to see that this is so.

After the Weiss Nature paper, essentially every publication in the scientific literature regarding "AIDS causation" assumes that its title is 100% accurate.

This scared me enough, to break a personal promise, and write about AIDS on the internet again.

Homology of genome of AIDS-associated virus with genomes of human T-cell leukemia viruses.

Arya SK, Gallo RC, Hahn BH, Shaw GM, Popovic M, Salahuddin SZ, Wong-Staal F.

A T lymphotropic virus found in patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) or lymphadenopathy syndrome has been postulated to be the cause of AIDS. Immunological analysis of this retrovirus and its biological properties suggest that it is a member of the family of human T-lymphotropic retroviruses known as HTLV. Accordingly, it has been named HTLV-III. In the present report it is shown by nucleic acid hybridization that sequences of the genome of HTLV-III are homologous to the structural genes (gag, pol, and env) of both HTLV-I and HTLV-II and to a potential coding region called pX located between the env gene and the long terminal repeating sequence that is unique to the HTLV family of retroviruses.
Science. 1984 Aug 31;225(4665):927-30

------------------------------

Molecular cloning and characterization of the HTLV-III virus associated with AIDS.

Hahn BH, Shaw GM, Arya SK, Popovic M, Gallo RC, Wong-Staal F.

We recently reported the isolation and characterization of a novel human T-lymphotropic retrovirus, HTLV-III, in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and in those at risk for the disease. After extensive sero-epidemiological studies, together with numerous virus isolations from these patients, we concluded that HTLV-III is the causative agent of AIDS. Here we report the molecular cloning and characterization of two highly related but distinct forms of the HTLV-III genome. The viral genome is approximately 10 kilobases long and is detected in HTLV-III-infected cells but not in uninfected cells, including normal human tissue, indicating that this virus is exogenous to man. We also demonstrate distant nucleic acid sequence homology between the cloned genome of HTLV-III and those of HTLV-I and HTLV-II. The availability of the cloned HTLV-III genome will now allow an unambiguous comparison of this virus with other retroviruses that also have been associated with the pathogenesis of AIDS, and moreover, with facilitate the development of diagnostic and therapeutic measures in the treatment of AIDS.

Nature. 1984 Nov 8-14;312(5990):166-9

-------------------------------------

The CD4 (T4) antigen is an essential component of the receptor for the AIDS retrovirus.

Dalgleish AG, Beverley PC, Clapham PR, Crawford DH, Greaves MF, Weiss RA.

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is characterized by opportunistic infections and by 'opportunistic neoplasms' (for example, Kaposi's sarcoma). Persistent generalized lymphadenopathy (PGL) is epidemiologically associated with AIDS, especially in male homosexuals. A subset of T lymphocytes positive for the CD4 antigen (also termed T4 antigen), is depleted in AIDS and PGL patients. A retrovirus found in T-cell cultures from these patients is strongly implicated in the aetiology of AIDS because of the high frequency of isolation and the prevalence of specific antibodies in the patients. Here we have detected cell-surface receptors for the AIDS retrovirus (human T-cell leukaemia virus-III (HTLV-III) and lymphadenopathy-associated virus-1 (LAV-1) isolates) by testing the susceptibility of cells to infection with pseudotypes of vesicular stomatitis virus bearing retroviral envelope antigens, and by the formation of multinucleated syncytia on mixing virus-producing cells with receptor-bearing cells. Receptors were present only on cells expressing CD4 antigen; among 155 monoclonal antibodies tested, each of the 14 anti-CD4 antibodies inhibited formation of syncytia and blocked pseudotypes. Productive infection of CD4+ cells with HTLV-III or LAV-1 markedly reduced cell-surface expression of CD4. In contrast, receptors for HTLV-I and HTLV-II were not restricted to CD4+ cells, were not blocked by anti-CD4 antibodies; cells productively infected with HTLV-I and HTLV-II expressed surface CD4. Hence, we conclude that the CD4 antigen is an essential and specific component of the receptor for the causative agent of AIDS.

'War' in Iraq/'War' on AIDS:
Same Rhetoric/Same Results

by Harvey Bialy, Ph.D.

A year and a half ago, the following customer review of my biography of Peter Duesberg appeared on Amazon.

An exact analogy (August 29, 2004)

"A number of people have commented here on the similarities between the War on AIDS and the War on Terror. As I learned from the crisp and clear explanatory prose in this book, the Bush presidency and its War on Terror are, in fact, excellent analogies to the HIV/AIDS hypothesis.

Both have been obvious total disasters in terms of practical results. Both are supported by fear, economic and social special interests, shifting-sands rationales, bad data, rhetoric spiced with religious fervor, outright deceptions and worse. Both are rooted in over-specified phantom boogeymen, a harmless virus and a perhaps not so harmless, but certainly elusive Osama, and his Fu Manchu-like shadowy network of (I'll kill ya!) Al Qaeda.

And yet, 50% of the electorate swallow the War on Terror and even want more, according to the omnipresent polls that should be heavily regulated, or perhaps outlawed since they clearly influence what they are supposed to neutrally report, like poorly designed experiments in biology. With the virus-AIDS hypothesis, it's worse, an overwhelming majority swallow it, and many to suicidal consequences."

Today, the US Ambassador to the "free and democratic republic of Iraq" gave this assessment:

"Despite much progress, much work remains," U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and Gen. George W. Casey, Jr. said in a joint statement. "The legitimate security forces must quell sectarian violence. Population centers must be secure to allow Iraq's new institutions to take root and businesses to flourish. Finally, the people must be able to trust their leadership."

Progress? O, Saddam is gone, one tends to forget. And Tony Fauci and his gang at the NIH have ARVs. But, really, what remains to be done seems an awful lot and does give the lie to the first bold but empty assertion.

I am constantly amazed that the conservative right, which appears to embrace HIV/AIDS criticism more easily than the left does not see this, and even more amazed that the left, which does indeed see through the soiled toilet tissue Washington writes its policies on, cannot see it either.

The Bush administration perverted what might have been a legitimate "war on terrorism" into a misguided, wasteful and dangerous invasion and occupation very much like the "war on AIDS," which should have been part of the "war on drugs" in the US and a "war on poverty" in Africa, became turned into a war on HIV, to the exclusive benefit of a variety of vested interests at the expense of the truth.

It is worth remembering that in both cases the chief device that was employed to lower the bar of proof sufficient for the pig to fly was terror itself.

Preemptive and Possibly, Prescient Prose

The other day Sy Hersh published a brilliant piece in the New Yorker that has had more powerful reverberations than one might have imagined. I refer to the fact that independent of whether what Mr. Hersh reported was accurate to its tiniest detail, it nonetheless has had the extremely important, preemptive effect of effectively taking the "nightmare of the nuclear option" off the table.

Five years ago, I wrote the following after waking in a cold sweat. The recent mainstream interest in the HIV/AIDS controversy, so courageously exposed in the March issue of Harper’s, combined with the Hersh exposé, caused me to remember it now.

If I may be so bold as to suggest that there is a parallel between the two "nightmares."

The Ultimate AIDS Nightmare

I wake up one morning and click my browser or turn on the TV to discover that the vaccine is ready, and plans are underway for the largest public health project in the recorded history of the planet. "Thanks to the ceaseless, selfless and near heroic efforts of (mostly US) government, academic and company scientists, the beginning of the 21st century will see the end of AIDS. No expense will be spared, and no corner of the globe will go unprotected.

This vast effort will take place in three phases. In the first phase, everyone will be tested in order to determine who is eligible for the vaccine. In the second, all persons who are antibody positive, and therefore ineligible, will immediately, and on a compassionate basis if needed, be provided the newest and most potent medicines to prolong and enrich the quality of their lives for as long as possible. In the third phase, actual vaccination of all antibody negatives will commence. Everyone who receives the vaccine will be tested to make certain that he or she has become antibody positive, and will be regularly retested, and given booster vaccinations when required. The program will begin almost immediately in all US hospitals with the testing and vaccination of every newborn child.

Since most antibody positives will be found in Africa, it is imperative that an unparalleled humanitarian effort be undertaken to ensure that the expensive pharmaceuticals that will be required are made available through the largesse and compassion of the industrialized countries, which will now repay the dark continent for hundreds of years of mistreatment by saving it from AIDS, even though the scourge came from there in the first place.

The heads of state of the G-7 nations have already met and pledged "whatever it takes" to meet the WHO deadline of December 31, 2002 (symbolically the final day of the first palindrome year of the millennium) as "Everybody is Positive Day."

Like all nocturnal neural performances, this particular totalitarian insanity (the same thing) has tendrils, if not roots, in waking so-called reality. Since natural vaccination is well known to be completely effective as measured by the lifelong presence of high levels of virus-neutralizing antibody in persons with positive AIDS tests, there is no scientific reason why any of the various vaccine preparations in trials that have been demonstrated to induce similar neutralizing antibodies could not tomorrow be declared the winner.

Even paranoiacs can have enemies, and any of three things could catalyze the subtle shift from the world we imagine we inhabit to the one of this Orwellian fantasy that in another order nightmare might turn out to be the same place. One. The heretics show signs of making serious trouble for the church. Two. The gravy train begins to decelerate with a steep slope. Three. The consolidation of medical science allows the various patents and other pies to be divided so as not to leave any of the deserving without a comfortable stash of whatever their heart's desire.

One Step Closer to 'The Vaccine'

by Harvey Bialy, Ph.D.

A few weeks ago, a brief essay entitled "The Ultimate AIDS Nightmare" was published here. The other day, the dark, collective fantasy on which it is based took another surrealistic turn, and the nightmare became far less a literary diversion than even I imagined when I wrote it.

"May 5, 2006 – The CDC will recommend at least one HIV test for everyone aged 13 to 64 who visits a doctor.

The radical change to HIV testing guidelines will be released in June or July, says Kevin Fenton, MD, Ph.D., the new director of the CDC’s National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention. Routine HIV tests in doctors’ offices and clinics will no longer require the pretest counseling now a part of all HIV testing.

Fenton, joined by former CDC AIDS chief James Curran, MD, MPH, now dean of Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, spoke today at a news conference marking the 25th anniversary of the AIDS pandemic.

"Most HIV is transmitted by the 25% of infected people who do not even realize they are infected," Fenton said. "We need to dramatically expand access to HIV testing by making it a routine aspect of clinical care."

Just like the coming military campaign against Iran, you can’t say you weren’t warned.

The Completely Other Side of AIDS:
Ibogaine and the Cult of Bwiti

by Harvey Bialy, Ph.D.

Of all the ironies associated with the international AIDS machine, none has struck me more profoundly than the following:

It is widely believed that "HIV/AIDS" originated in Africa, a belief that found almost instant acceptance in the still essentially racist, and ignorant of Africa West. The evidence that the African origin of AIDS (as well as a sexually transmitted epidemic of immunodeficiency) is stuff and nonsense is abundant, and easily available to anyone who wishes – through the links on the AIDS Wiki homepage for example.

What is ironic is that instead of being the source, Africa in reality holds the potential for curing the underlying cause of non-iatrogenic AIDS in the industrialized West. In the equatorial belt of West Africa grows a shrub called in Latin Tabernanthe iboga, and from which is extracted a possibly unique in its properties psychomimetic indole alkaloid called ibogaine. Among these properties is one of immense therapeutic promise for societies plagued by illicit drug abuse.

In Gabon, the bark of the root of this sacred plant has been used for centuries as the sacrament of the major indigenous religion called "Bwiti" because the state of ‘intoxicated concentration’ it produces permits the initiate to partake of an internal dialog (sometimes for 18 hours) in which his life is revealed much as though he were watching a theatrical performance and could question the director of the play as it unfolded. Ultimately the initiate encounters Bwiti itself (the ancestor of all the ancestors) and in their conversation the "god" reveals the meaning and purpose of his life.

When purified ibogaine is ingested by heroin or cocaine addicts, the results are that the addict awakens from his trance free of withdrawal symptoms if a heroin abuser, and more importantly free of the need to consume whatever addictive drug had been the preferred poison. Whether these, by now, heavily documented results (see the ibogaine link above) are due to changes in specific brain biochemistry related to the action and metabolism of the drug, or whether they are the result of some larger scale neurological deprogramming, or some mixture is an area of active (although sadly under-funded) investigation at the moment.

Predictably, the NIH and the FDA have been extremely reluctant to pursue this avenue of addiction intervention, preferring their own brands of narcotics like methadone. Equally predictably, when an idea is that good, private enterprise in one form or another will discover it, as can anyone by typing "ibogaine treatments" in an internet search engine.

You do not have to agree with Peter Duesberg that "recreational and pharmaceutical drug use" are the real causes of the immunodeficiency related and unrelated diseases from which AIDS patients suffer to agree that heroin and cocaine abuse are problems in the United States and other western countries of a magnitude that makes HIV/AIDS pale in comparison.

I have the dream that one day Africa will be seen as the source of the cure of America’s worst "disease" rather than the source of its cause.
